Meaningful progress requires fair, equal, and inclusive opportunity for all. We must ensure that all students are given the chance to start at the same starting line on the same field. Samay’s vision for Baltimore County Public Schools asks us to address and learn from the inequities of our past in order to provide the next generation with the tools to build a better future.

STUDENT WELL-BEING

Preparing our students for success requires teaching them about personal well-being. Having a strong background in these areas is critical for success no matter what path a student embarks on post-graduation.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Education is more than algebra. Our schools can be an early entry point to the world of banking and personal finance. Students deserve to be exposed to the “real world” applications of the classroom to build an understanding and confidence in the powerful tools of saving, budgeting, investing, and sound fiscal stewardship.

MENTAL HEALTH

Nationally, one in three high school students—and half of female students—reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. We can end the stigma surrounding mental health care in Baltimore County and expand access to mental health services in schools by providing greater support to our school counselors and teaching our students that mental health is just as important as any other aspect of their well-being.

EQUITY AND INCLUSION

Our education system must empower every student—no matter their ZIP Code—to reach their full potential. Doing so requires an education system that is built on equity and inclusive of all students from our extremely diverse County.

SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE

The recent announcement of new schools and renovations is just the first step in upgrading the vibrancy of our school system. We must ensure that additional dollars and master plans for new schools are directed equitably and impact the communities that need them most—especially those who have been underserved for decades.

CURRICULUM

Inclusive education is one where all students feel seen, feel heard, and have their experiences acknowledged. Preparing our students for the future requires teaching them about our past. Our schools should embrace and promote the rich diversity of Baltimore County with literature and programs that reflect our multiculturalism.

EDUCATOR ADVOCACY

Our educators work tirelessly everyday to provide a world-class education to our students. Now more than ever, we must ensure they are able to meet the needs of their individual classrooms and that they have the support they need to thrive.

TAILORING TO THE CLASSROOM

Teachers know their classrooms best—and every classroom is different. Whether we are implementing new policies or changing existing ones, we must ensure that teachers retain the flexibility to adapt to the needs of their specific classroom.

SUPPORTING TEACHERS

Teachers are the frontline workers of education and we must do more to show our support. Supporting continuing education, promoting greater teacher input in decision making, and increased access to mental health services are just a few of the steps we must take to recruit, retain, and support the best educators for Baltimore County Public Schools.
