Police Education & Accountability

Education and understanding must be part of public safety.

We cannot ignore the injustices that have occurred at the hands of police across the country. However, as the relationship between police and those they work to protect is strained, Samay is looking to strengthen our community bond.

Working directly with the Baltimore County Police Department, Samay embarked on a cultural awareness campaign about the Sikh faith, further educating our officers on the multiple facets that exist within our multicultural community. This campaign, while creating resources for BCPD themselves, also advocates on behalf of Sikh individuals who want to work as an officer--and ensures that they are able to wear their turbans on-duty.

As Chair of the Young Democrats of Maryland Caucus of Color, Samay has worked to educate fellow Democrats on their rights when encountering the police through events such as Know Your Rights: Police Encounters for Citizens and Non-Citizens. Online educational events like this one encourage active dialogue among community members and the officers that work to protect them. More importantly, they give under- or misrepresented people the knowledge they need to appropriately defend their rights when interacting with the police.
