Senator Shelly Hettleman Endorses

Samay Singh Kindra for Board of Education

Kindra earns endorsement from longtime Baltimore County leader

OWINGS MILLS, MD (Month Date, 2022) – Maryland State Senator Shelly Hettleman has endorsed Samay Singh Kindra to be the next member of the Baltimore County Board of Education from the Fourth District. Representing District 11, Senator Hettleman has decades of public service experience representing Baltimore County and Maryland.

"I’m thrilled to endorse Samay to serve on the Baltimore Board of Education. Baltimore County needs young, bright leaders like Samay who are motivated to bring concrete change to our communities,” said Senator Hettleman. “As a fellow graduate of BCPS, I know Samay will work tirelessly to ensure that the future of Baltimore County is one where all students, teachers, and families have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential."

Senator Hettleman has represented District 11 in the State Senate since 2020, where she currently serves on the Judicial Proceedings Committee, as vice-chair of the Rules Committee and a member of the Joint Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, among others. Before serving in the Senate, Hettlenan served as a Member of the House of Delegates from 2015 to 2020, as a member of the Appropriations Committee  and was a Member of the Commission to Review Maryland’s Use of Assessments and Testing in Public Schools from 2015 to 2017.

“I am honored to have the support of such a strong community leader like Senator Hettleman,” said Kindra. “Now is the time for meaningful progress in our community to provide the next generation with the tools to build a better future. Senator Hettleman’s support is a firm reminder that our vision will help pave such a path forward for our communities. I look forward to working with the Senator and other partners in Annapolis as we work to provide our students with a first-class education.”

Kindra’s momentum in the race for Board of Education continues to grow rapidly with the support of another key Baltimore County leader. In endorsing Kindra, Senator Hettleman joins Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr, Speaker Adrienne Jones and the District 10 Unity Team, the Teacher’s Association of Baltimore County, and the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County.

Kindra is a lifelong resident of Baltimore County and a proud graduate of the Baltimore County School System. His three-part vision for Baltimore County Schools aims to improve student well-being, prioritize equity and inclusion, and emphasize educator advocacy.

As a Sikh Indian American, he is seeking to become the first turbaned Sikh elected to office in the state of Maryland. Kindra grew up in Owings Mills, Maryland attended New Town Elementary, Sudbrook Middle, and Western Tech High. He then went on to attend the University of Maryland, where he earned two undergraduate degrees and is now studying at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law.
